Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care is a health profession that treats back pain, neck pain, strains, osteoarthritis, herniated discs, musculoskeletal issues, sprains, sciatica, joint issues and other MSK problems. Chiropractors traditionally used to rely on a host of manual therapies including manipulation and spinal mobilization in order to offer pain relief and improve range of motion and functionality within patients. The majority of the time chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or surgery.

Chiropractors are not limited to manipulating the spine, although spinal and vertebrae adjustments are most commonly associated with this type of medicine. There is a huge scope of evidence-based chiropractic treatment options available including traction, ultrasound and the use of physiologic therapies such as electrical nerve stimulation. Chiropractors additionally will often provide dietary and nutritional recommendations and incorporate specific postural programs into your exercise routine.

Chiropractic Adjustment

A chiropractic adjustment is also referred to as manual manipulation, spinal manipulation or chiropractic manipulation. This is a common way to therapeutically treat pain in the lower back. A chiropractic adjustment refers to the process of the Chiropractor manipulating the vertebrae. Vertebrae that function with abnormal movement patterns and fail to perform properly are candidates for a correction. The main goal of this treatment modality is to improve functioning for the patient and improve the range of motion by reducing subluxation and nerve irritability.

Chiropractic Adjustment Description

Most often, a chiropractic adjustment involves an extreme sense of relief for the patient. Some patients, however, have reported minor discomfort. This sensation typically disappears rather quickly and usually occurs if the surrounding muscle tissue is in a state of spasm or if the patient becomes tense during their treatment. On occasion, certain patients may experience an audible gas release or accompanying joint cavitation. This noise is caused by the release of carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen that releases pressure in the cavitation or the joint. Many chiropractic treatments include using a short lever arm thrust applied at high velocity to the affected vertebra.

Spinal Manipulation and Manual Manipulation

The terms “spinal manipulation” and “manual manipulation” from a Chiropractor refers to having a short lever arm thrust being applied to a vertebra that is in an abnormal position. This can help restore range of motion in the neck and the back while improving overall functionality by reducing nerve irritability. It may take numerous appointments to have the bones and muscles hold their correct position. The amount of treatments depends on how misaligned a person is and how long they have been out of alignment. For instance, if someone has been out of alignment for a while, their surrounding muscle tissue may have overcompensated. Most patients report feeling better after their visit.

Mobilization

Chiropractic mobilization refers to manipulation of an extremely low velocity. The movement and stretching of the muscles and joints is completed with the goal of increasing the range of motion in locations that are sore and stiff.
